The Liberal government has decided to ditch their long-held promise of electoral reform.
In a mandate letter Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wrote quote – “A clear preference for a new electoral system, let alone a consensus, has not emerged,”
“Furthermore, without a clear preference or a clear question, a referendum would not be in Canada’s interest.”
The Liberal’s promise of changing the way Canadians vote, which was supposed to be done in time for the 2019 federal election, was once highly touted.
NDP critic Nathan Cullen called the decision “the most cynical display of self-serving politics”. Cullen is planning on meeting with Democratic Institutions Minister Karina Gould in an attempt to get the Liberals to recommit.
Other reaction came from the Green Party, who tweeted they are “incredibly disappointed”, while many Canadians voiced their displeasure on social media.
