Diabetes Canada is the new name for the Canadian Diabetes Association.
And with it comes the concerted effort to bring an end the chronic illness and an end to the stigma, discrimination and the complications that come with it.
Diabetes Canada’s goals include removing 10-million kilograms of sugar from Canadians’ diets by 2020, preventing 500-thousand cases of type 2 diabetes and pre-diabetes and creating connections among youth with type 1 diabetes.
Saskatchewan spokesperson Janice Daniels says as of 2014, there were 11-million people in Canada with diabetes or pre-diabetes. 1.5-million Canadians have type 2 diabetes and don’t know it.
