Yorkton mayor Bob Maloney and his counterparts from Regina and Saskatoon, and the president of SUMA met with provincial officials about the cut to the grants in lieu program yesterday. Maloney says all sides had a good dialogue
“The message was received by the provincial government that our mayors are concerned,” Maloney said. “We’re looking at decreases in revenue sharing ranging from 41 all the up to 58 per cent in Yorkton.”
Maloney says cutting the program amounts to a 2.3 million dollar hit for the city of Yorkton. Maloney was also asked if legal action could be pursued.
“Personally I’ve always found legal action…by the time everybody gets paid you don’t get much” Yorkton’s mayor believes. “But given the talk we had today (Wednesday) if you were to ask if I’m more optimistic yes I am.”
SUMA president Gordon Barnhart says they had a good conversation, but more meetings are needed. Government relations minister Donna Harpauer says there was some give and take on both sides, but no resolution at this time.
