Libraries across Saskatchewan are feeling the pinch, after last month’s provincial budget reduced library grants by three-and-a-half million dollars.
The Parkland Regional Library has had to make some tough decisions, in the wake of the budget.
Parkland Regional Director Helen McCutcheon says they’ve been forced to lay off five full-time staff at their headquarters, and three permanent part-time employees at the Yorkton Public Library.
McCutcheon says it was a difficult decision to make, as their 55 library branches throughout the region remain very busy.
McCutcheon says she and her fellow directors will meet with the Assistant Deputy Minister of Education next week, with an eye toward getting some, if not all of the library funding restored.
