Saying it was necessary to restore “public trust and confidence” in the nation’s top law enforcement agency, U.S. President Donald Trump fired FBI Director James Comey.
The White House says the search for a new FBI director is already underway.
James Comey got the pink slip after the FBI corrected a sentence in Comey’s sworn testimony last week in the case of Hillary Clinton allegedly having access to emails containing classified information.
He initially said a top aide to Clinton, had sent “hundreds and thousands” of emails to her husband’s laptop, including some with sensitive information.
Now the Federal Bureau of Investigation says, in a 2-page letter, that only “a small number” of the thousands of emails found on the laptop had been forwarded there while most had simply been backed up from electronic devices.
It also comes in the midst of an investigation by the agency into whether Trump’s campaign had ties to Russia’s election meddling.
