Manitoba Premier Brian Pallister has been in Edmonton the past few days for the Council of the Federation meeting with his fellow premiers.
Pallister says one of the concerns in discussions around trade included the federal government’s plan to legalize marijuana in the middle of the NAFTA discussions.
“I would think there wouldn’t be a worse time to rush into legalizing marijuana than right in the middle of negotiating a free-trade agreement with the United States.” the Premier said.
This has concerned several premiers, so Pallister says his government work to prevent that, especially from affecting agriculture in terms of the free trade agreement.
Significant investments and efforts are being made…to make sure that we’re protecting not only the families who are engaged in this important industry, but also all the people of Manitoba who depend on the jobs.” Pallister said.
He adds that the industry has the chance to grow but there is no doubt that there are significant challenges ahead.
The Council of the Federation meeting wrapped up Wednesday afternoon.
