The Yorkton Chamber of Commerce inducted two new Life Members today (Thu). Former GX94 station owner George Gallagher was one of them, and his son, Kelly, accepted the award on his behalf.
“Home will always be Yorkton for my parents,” Kelly noted. “I think this is an award that is near and dear to him because it’s from Yorkton, and I think that’s what’s very special about it”
The other inductee was Dick DeRyk, who co-founded the “Yorkton This Week” newspaper in 1975 and says it’s an honour.
“You don’t do things in order to get these kinds of rewards,” DeRyk said. “You do it because it provided a livelihood for yourself and your family.”
“But it’s nice to be recognized for the work you’ve done and I’m really grateful for that.” He added.
Executive Director of the Yorkton Chamber of Commerce Juanita Polegi admits that the fact both members have a media background, is just a coincidence.
“When the names were put forward, everybody just thought of the men and the contributions they’ve made it was kind of after the fact that we realized that they had that strong media connection,” Polegi said.
“Both of them have given so much to the community, they deserved the recognition.”
