Skate Melville fears a proposed 15 per cent increase in rental fees, at the Horizon Credit Union Centre and Merv Moore Sports Plex, for next season, would cause a negative ripple effect.
The 2018 ice rental fee at the Horizon Credit Union Centre would increase to roughly $20-thousand from $17-thousand last year.
The same fee for this year at the Merv Moore Sports Plex would go up to about $9-thousand from $77-hundred in 2017.
Facility rental fees would be approximately 7 to 8 thousand dollars; a storage fee of $4-thousand at both rinks would be added, which Vice President Darcy Almasi said they never had to pay in previous years.
Almasi adds expenses would go up by a few thousand, should the proposed changes be approved.
“We just can’t afford to come up with that kind of money,” he said.
“Our major concern is losing skaters and losing ice time. Skate Yorkton and Skate Esterhazy all rent our facility. I’ve been in contact with Skate Yorkton and it sounds like with the increase of ice fees they will not be running summer camps here, they will move it back to Yorkton because the savings will not be substantial .”
Almasi says Skate Yorkton uses the ice in Melville, for spring and summer camps, because it’s cheaper than ice fees in Yorkton.
Supporting skaters while keeping costs reasonable
The City of Melville wants to strike a balance of supporting skaters with affordability.
Mayor Walter Streelasky says some factors come into play before proposing any sort of a fee hike.
“To operate the Horizon Credit Union Centre is demanding,” Streelasky said. “We subsidize so many of these facilities, as do many other communities, and that’s the difficult part that we have is how do you encourage people to use our facilities more and more? How far do we lean on them? How much do we expect of them in a financial sense?”
Streelasky says every 2 or 3 years, a review on the fees are done, and ocassionally they go up to keep pace with the cost of living.
The Mayor says City Council voted to move this issue into the next Workshop Meeting, in 2 weeks, to discuss it more and get additional information.
