The Melfort Mustangs will have a shot at defending their Canalta Cup Championship as they edged the Nipawin Hawks 5-4 in Game 7 of their SJHL Semi-Final on Wednesday, sending them to their second straight final, this time against the Flin Flon Bombers.
The Mustangs appeared free and clear, up 4-0 early in the third, and 5-1 with under five minutes left, but the Hawks scored three times in the last three minutes to make it close.
Sam Houston, Travis Mayan (1g-1a) and Craig Leverton scored second period goals for the Mustangs, while Dakota Boutin and Brett Kitt extended the lead in the third period.
The Hawks scored four third period goals, nearly clawing all the way back, with all their scoring coming in the last 10 minutes of regulation. Eric Bolden had points on three straight goals, getting the Hawks on the board on the powerplay at 10:11. Garrett Dunlop struck on the man advantage at 17:12, Bolden made it really interesting cutting it to 5-3 with 1:39 remaining. By time Chase Thudium made it 5-4, just seven seconds were left and that was as close as they would get.
The Mustangs move on to face the Flin Flon Bombers, and they’ll have Games 1 & 2 on home ice this Friday and Saturday.
