Manitoba’s Premier talked about the federal government’s approval of the Enbridge Line 3 pipeline.
Overall he’s pleased the federal government approved the project, which will traverse through southwestern Manitoba, and said like people driving from point A to point B, moving oil to tidewater ports via pipe is important.
“We need to have fuel, we need to have oil, we need to use these products” Pallister said.
Opposition to the approved pipeline, and to the other approved line being Kinder-Morgan, argue they will have a negative impact on the environment, and going so far as to suggest leaving the oil in the ground. The Premier disagrees with these arguments.
“I think they are wrong,” Pallister declared, “and it’s clearly shown that pipeline transport is safer than rail.”
“You don’t have to go any further than that Lac-Megantic tragedy over in Quebec to know, there’s a danger with above-ground rail transport of these things.”
Pallister said the approved Enbridge pipeline will provide a greener way of transporting Canadian oil.
“It’s very important to realize that for our society to advance…we have a process that we can respect going forward. All of us want to see a clean environment and environmental protection is important.”
