A spokesperson with the union representing Correctional Officers says Wednesday’s penitentiary riot started in the prison’s kitchen.
James Bloomfield says the inmates working there were on a modified routine prior to the chaos, and refused to work because of portion sizes.
Bloomfield says the prisoners then barricaded themselves, destroying everything in sight in the process.
What proceeded was a struggle to restore order between the emergency response team and the inmates, which ended with six inmates suffering injuries, one guard taken to hospital, and 43 year old Jason Leonard Bird the only fatality in the incident.
The RCMP and Coroner’s Office are looking into Bird’s death, while Correctional Service Canada is investigating the incident.
