Scores of RM’s across Saskatchewan are facing a familiar foe in a dwindling population.
Stats from the 2011 provincial census show less than 200 thousand of Saskatchewan’s population, just over 1 million at the time, called an RM home — that’s less than 17 per cent of the province’s population.
The main reason is the continuing flow of people moving to urban centres, such as Regina or Saskatoon.
Rose Olfert from the University of Saskatchewan says at a time when the government is amalgamating everything, from health regions to school boards, the topic of merging RM’s isn’t under discussion. She adds as the population withers down to nothing, it may no longer be necessary to change anything.
