The Tory MP for the Dauphin-Swan River-Neepawa riding believes the Prime Minister doesn’t understand the importance of the oil sands to Canada’s economy.
Robert Sopuck says the fact Trudeau said he intends on phasing out oil sands, after approving the Trans-Mountain pipeline expansion, is a contradiction.
“I’m glad that they approved at least one pipeline…but how can we fill up a pipeline if there’s no oil?” He said.
From a local point-of-view, Sopuck says many of his constituents either work directly in the oil sands, or work in sectors that rely on them.
“They (may) need some extra money, they have to pay off a student loan, or save money for a mortgage” the MP said, “the oil sands have national positive implications.”
“And for Mr. Trudeau to so casually dismiss the half a million jobs…is nothing short of astonishing” Sopuck said
He adds this decision would greatly affect his constituents.
