(OCN Blizzard Press Release)
After months of deliberation, the Opaskwayak Cree Nation Chief and Council announced they’ve passed a motion to allow the OCN Blizzard Jr. A hockey club the opportunity to self-sustain in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League for the 2017-18 season, upon MJHL approval.
However, with immense public support from all communities, and a feasible budget proposal from the OCN Blizzard Board of Directors, Chief and Council passed a motion, by a vote of 5-3, to submit intent to allow the hockey club a future season based out of the GLMC, pending MJHL approval.
“I would like to thank Chief and Council for allowing us to work things out and make things better with the OCN Blizzard hockey club. It is great news to hear the Blizzard are taking steps to be back in the MJHL beyond the 2016-17 season.”
– Blizzard Board Chair Dan Moore
The Blizzard boasts one of the best teams in the MJHL and is led by Captain, and 2016-17 MJHL MVP, Brady Keeper. The Blizzard have scored 195 goals while allowing just 148, and have the league’s leading goal scorer in George King with 35 goals.
