The Saskatchewan government was hit with what they called a “denial of service attack”.
It is a cyber attack where a program floods services like emails and websites with traffic from many sources to the point where they are slowed to a crawl.
The targets were the Saskatchewan.ca website and the government’s internal emails which were down Sunday night for two hours and Monday morning another two hours, respectively, but both are up and running.
Deputy Minister of Central Services Richard Murray an investigation is underway as to whether this was a separate attack or connected to the “WannaCry ransomware” attacks that have affected more than 150 countries worldwide.
Murray says this isn’t the first time they have dealt with cyber attacks, and will continue to update anti-malware software to evade similar attacks in the future.
Murray also says personal information is well protected.
