A new National Junior A Hockey Champion has been crowned.
The RBC Cup came down to the AJHL’s Brooks Bandits and the host Cobourg Cougars.
In the first period, the Cougars’ Jamie Huber got things going with a goal at the 3:56 mark, but not before the Bandits’ Conner Jean knotted things up at one less than five minutes later.
The score would stay that way until the third period, as Bandits’ captain Nick Prkusic put one in the back of the net at 11:29. Then it was Cobourg’s turn to respond and they did – Ryan Casselman scored a crucial goal with one minute, seven seconds left in regulation time.
In overtime, the burnt biscuit crossed the goal line at 8:21 in the extra frame, and the game winner came courtesy of the Cougars’ Nick Minerva – sending the hometown crowd into a frenzy.
The Cougars’ Stefano Durante, who was named the 2017 RBC Cup Top Goaltender, turned away 41 shots in the win.
