Saskatchewan’s Highways Minister David Marit says the town of Balgonie must recognize the importance of its new overpass, which has resulted in the permanent closure of the access point from Main Street.
Marit says he is sympathetic towards the concerns some businesses and residents have about the loss of that access.
“Being from a small town I realize the importance of access highways for the business community within those towns. First and foremost this is about safety,” He said. “There’s been fatalities at that intersection over the past 10 to 12 years.”
Marit says he believes Balgonie will prosper now, as construction has been moved out and motorists are learning how to navigate that area.
One restaurant owner says layoffs and lost profits are now a common theme for him with the closure.
A petition to be presented to the Ministry of Highways on the issue has been circulating in the community and has close to three-thousand signatures on it.
