A jury in a New Orleans suburb have found Ronald Gasser guilty of manslaughter in the shooting death of former NFL and CFL running back Joe McKnight in December 2016.
Gasser will be sentenced in March, and is facing up to 40-years in prison.
However his defense lawyer says the jury’s decision will be appealed, maintaining the argument that McKnight was the aggressor and the killing was self-defence.
Prosecutors said that on December 1, 2016, the 56-year-old shot at McKnight from inside his car, after chasing the 28-year-old’s vehicle in an argument over how McKnight was driving.
Prosecutors add an autopsy disproved Gasser’s claim that McKnight lunged at him, but acknowledged the victim was driving dangerously.
McKnight used to play for the Kansas City Chiefs and New York Jets in the National Football League (NFL) and the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the Canadian Football League (CFL).
