The opposition in Saskatchewan is criticizing application of the sales tax on used vehicle sales.
The NDP’s Carla Beck says the sales tax rate is unfair because it is based on the red book value of the vehicle and not actual condition and sale price.
Finance minister Donna Harpauer says the sales tax can be appealed.
“The appeal process is very reasonable,” Harpauer said. “If there is rust and wear and tear…the consumer can say this is why he/she feels the vehicle is worth less, that can be looked at, and the PST will be overturned.”
Harpauer says the red book value for sales tax is used across Canada and was in effect under the NDP.
