Grants-in-lieu was one of the items talked about at a Yorkton Chamber of Commerce lunch this afternoon (Fri).
Finance Minister Donna Harpauer spoke at the lunch and said one confusing aspect of grants-in-lieu was that two Crown Corporations called a fee a grant-in-lieu that wasn’t based on property and property tax.
She adds all other Crown Corporations pays grants-in-lieu according to property tax.
Another item that confused many was the different percentages qualified communities get from grants-in-lieu.
Harpauer hopes some of the changes made to the program makes it easier for individuals and municipalities to understand.
Regarding the provincial budget, she understands last year’s budget was a tough pill to swallow for the City of Yorkton.
Yorkton was one of the hardest hit, with a million dollars in funding lost.
Harpauer maintains the budget will be balanced next year.
