The new Saskatchewan Highway Patrol undertook an expanded mandate – essentially new duties – on July 1st.
Steve Shaheen with the Ministry of Highways says they are dispatched when RCMP or municipal police forces are unavailable and how quickly they respond depends on where they are when the call comes in.
“We could be centrally located and then you know there would be twenty minutes from border to border, depending on where their region is. But if they respond to something in the north part it would double their time to get to the southern part of that zone.” said Shaheen.
By the middle of July there had been 47 provincial response team calls and of those, the Saskatchewan Highway Patrol responded to nine.
