Yorkton City Council will spend 50-thousand dollars on a study to determine options for the replacement of Kinsmen Arena.
Mayor Bob Maloney says he would like to see two ice surfaces under one roof.
“I’ve always been a proponent of doing things at the Gallagher Centre because if you got two kids playing hockey, chances are you’re going to one building and that makes it easier for people,” Maloney said. “You’re not driving back and forth, having one youngster waiting in the lobby while you’re off to pick up another one.
“I think drawing those services together is always a good thing.”
While the Mayor would like to see this happen, parking could become an issue.
“It will add to some of our stress, but there is a lot of room on that site,” he continued. “And I think we can find ways around it and certainly as time moves along I think that will get looked after.”
A 2009 assessment of Kinsmen Arena determined the facility had a remaining lifespan of 10 years.
The study would also look at the possibility of adding an outdoor component to the Gallagher Centre Water Park.
