One of the small pipes from the ice chilling system at the Horizon Credit Union Centre in Melville apparently ruptured more than a week ago which resulted in no ice. Around September 22nd, one of the small pipes that contains brine fractured, causing it to mix with ammonia — a gas that moves around the pipes to chill the brine. It’s hoped it will be restored in time for this Friday’s hockey game between the Millionaires and Yorkton Terriers. The brine-ammonia mixture is deadly, as a similar incident at a hockey rink in Fernie, B.C. killed three people last October.
