SGI has been recognized as one of Canada’s safest employers.
SGI’s Chief Human Resources Officer, Tamara Erhardt says they got a gold award by the Canadian Occupational Safety magazine in the public sector category.
She says this is the first time the provincial insurance company has received such an award.
“SGI has a very good reputation in the community for being a leader in safey, and we wanted employees within this company to have the same approach that we do externally, so taking care in here as well as taking care out there.” Erhardt said.
Erhardt adds SGI was chosen for the award based on the company’s significant advancements in safety management programming and overall safety culture.
Programs the crown corporation implemented include Emergency Response programming; Hazard Identification and Control programming; Occupational Health Committee programming, including a Safety Recognition Program for employees and work units who “walk the talk” on safety, leading by example.
Canada’s Safest Employers Awards features 10 industry-specific safety award categories, ranging from hospitality to mining and natural resources,” SGI notes in a news release. “Companies are judged on a wide range of occupational health and safety elements, including employee training, OHS management systems, incident investigation, emergency preparedness and innovative health and safety initiatives.”
