Some bad news for people who use the ice at the Horizon Credit Union Centre in Melville.
“We are discontinuing our spring and summer ice offerings for the 2019 season,” said Chris Bruce, Director of Community Services for the City of Melville. “Just with some of the issues our ice plant has faced throughout this year, we’re going to use this down time to schedule maintenance on the plant, just to ensure we’re up and running to provide longevity of our arena and future ice for years to come.
The overall cost of the work, he says, has yet to be determined.
Maintenance includes flushing ammonia gas and brine out of the pipes and basic concrete work which he says “has been compounding over the years and is coming to the forefront.”
Back in September, one of the small pipes that houses brine ruptured, causing it to mix with ammonia — a gas that moves around the pipes to chill the brine.
At the time Bruce believed a defective pipe was the root cause.
