Saskatchewan’s social services minister sparred off with NDP leader Ryan Meili during Question Period over child apprehensions.
Meili is concerned over the fact the number of Saskatchewan babies apprehended in the first month of life has risen 42 percent over the five years, from 104 in 2013 to 148 in 2017.
Furthermore, he and many others are waiting for an overhaul of the foster care system which was first announced six years ago.
Meili says he has seen firsthand the grief new parents went through as a result of apprehensions from his time as a family doctor and that the government isn’t doing enough to move from words to action on this issue.
Paul Merriman says they have several programs that are in place to keep families together and they do not just go in and apprehend children unless it is in an extreme situation.
Merriman adds they have a good record of working with First Nations communities when it comes to children in care as they have 11 homes in the province that are operated by those communities
