Saskatchewan has introduced legislation tentatively covering six kinds of cancer for firefighters.
Once passed, firefighters can claim ovarian, prostate, skin, multiple myeloma, cervical and breast cancer as occupational diseases.
Saskatoon firefighter Shauna Baccus thinks it’s a good step “for not only the current female firefighters that are on any of the departments in the province, but the up and coming generations.”
“With the type of carcinogens that we deal with on a daily basis, weekly basis, yearly basis, like it was said before it’s only a matter of when.” Baccus added.
Justice Minister Don Morgan said they want female firefighters to receive the same coverage as their male counterparts.
Morgan adds firefighters face great risks while performing their duties.
