Melville’s City Manager says recycling is not just “a Melville issue” but a national issue. Ron McCullough explained that the recycling market has bottomed out recently with countries like China and the Philippines rejecting materials to process. It’s created a ripple effect, with Rail City Industries, which does recycling, reporting a loss of over $65-thousand for the 2018-19 fiscal year. McCullough knows this increase in September will result in backlash from the public. He says they’ll continue to work with municipalities, the province and RCI to find alternative solutions.
