SGI Reports Deaths and Injuries on Highways Going Down

Injuries and deaths on Saskatchewan’s roadways are trending downwards, according to a stats report from SGI regarding numbers last year.

Minister responsible for SGI Joe Hargrave says issues such as distracted driving may even see harsher penalties in the future, in an effort to bring the numbers down.

“Our current fine is $280, but maybe that’s not enough,” said Hargrave

“Maybe it has to be substantially more, maybe you lose your car for a while or your license for a while. We’re still working on those numbers,” he added

768 people were injured and 22 deaths were reported from distracted driving in the province in 2018, compared to stats from 2008 when there were over 18 hundred injuries and 43 deaths.
