CARP, the Canadian Association of Retired Persons, says more than 82 per cent of COVID-19 related deaths are connected to long-term care homes.
It’s a topic that will be discussed on Thursday for National Seniors Day at the largest ever virtual meeting of seniors that is open to anyone who wants to participate.
Chief Community Officer, Anthony Quinn, says before the pandemic, there was a shortage of staff in long term care homes and not enough funding, and the pandemic has really highlighted and magnified that issue.
CARP is advocating for provinces to switch around their funding and spend more to keep people in their own homes rather than seniors having to move to a long term care home, just because there is no other option for them.
The virtual event begins at 11 a.m. Saskatchewan time on Thursday.
