The Melville & District Chamber of Commerce is applying for a federal grant worth $150-thousand towards revitalizing Melville’s downtown core.
Chamber Executive Director Carol Weins says this is a 10-15 year plan to make downtown Melville better.
In order to get the grant, 25 percent needs to be invested into the project, which works out to be 37-thousand 500 dollars, and Melville City Council voted in favour of meeting this financial requirement.
Should the Chamber’s application be approved, the plan is to purchase 16 “Heritage Lamp Posts” for the downtown core as well as “Historic District” street signs, and allow 4 businesses each year to apply for $5-thousand grants to upgrade their store front, which would be reviewed by the Historical Downtown Revitalization Committee.
