Florida man arrested and charged in relation to the discovery of four people dead near the Canada-U.S. Border

An arrest has been made in connection to the four individuals found deceased on Wednesday near the Canada-U.S. border.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Minnesota, U.S. Border Officers stopped a 15-passenger van carrying an American and two undocumented foreign nationals, and another five individuals were found walking in the direction of where the van was located.

47-year-old Steve Shand of Florida was arrested and charged with human smuggling, and he was remanded in custody.

On Wednesday, an adult male, an adult female, a male in his mid-teens and an infant were found deceased near the Canada-US border, outside of Emerson, Manitoba.

It is believed they were trying to cross the border on foot and were connected to Shand.

It is also believed that all four individuals died from exposure to the cold weather, but an autopsy has been scheduled to confirm the cause of death.
