The Pope Apologizes For The Church’s Role In Residential Schools

Pope Francis has apologized for the Catholic church’s role in the residential school system. Speaking at Maskwacis, Alberta, this morning, the pope says it’s important to remember the devastating policies of assimilation, and that the policies marginalized Indigenous people and robbed them of their language and culture. He says the memories of the children who never returned from residential schools has left him with a sense of “sorrow, indignation and shame.” Francis also has meetings with Indigenous leaders in Quebec and Iqaluit.
