Career Day at Chief Sabitawasis School on Fishing Lake First Nation

I had such a blast at the 2024 Career Fair Day at Chief Sabitawasis School on Fishing Lake First Nation last week! Thank you so much to the school for inviting GX94/FOX FM to be apart of it.

The kids I met were so brave. When I am on location and I ask adults to come on the air with me, usually their first answer is NO! But these kids, they all wanted to go on the radio. It was really fun getting to show them the equipment that we use to broadcast, the programs to control the music and commercials that go out on the air waves. And seeing their faces light up after I had them on the air!

It’s a big deal figuring out what you want to be when you grow up. How did I get into radio?

  1. I wanted to live with my sister, so that I didn’t have to live on my own when I went to post secondary.
  2. I wasn’t a fan of school so going for a degree and 4 years or more of schooling was OUT.
  3. I loved public speaking, I knew that, so, a diploma in Broadcast Journalism sounded not too bad.
  4. I took a tour of the radio and tv studios at the college, fell in love with it.
  5. Decided I didn’t want to have to worry about how I looked everyday, RADIO was the way to go!

I loved the answers the students were giving me that day. What’s your favourite class? Math! Science! What do you want to be when you grow up? Something in engineering! A child phycologist! Brilliant! Their enthusiasm for different career paths was truly inspiring.

I want to give a huge shoutout to Chief Sabitawasis School for their amazing teachers and staff who were incredibly welcoming during my recent visit. It was really special to see how much the students loved their school and felt such a strong sense of belonging there. The positive energy and sense of community were palpable! -Tonya Cherry-
