Yorkton’s “Honour Our Veterans” banner committee have begun displaying banners that celebrate area veterans, and the sacrifices they have made.
Committee member Tammy Hall says they are very happy with how the banners turned out, adding the project is progressing well.
“Started off a week ago where we had some of the banners hung on Darlington Avenue around the cenotaph and down Broadway (Street),” she said.
This year, over 80 people sponsored banners, leading to the production of 41 double-sided banners honouring veterans, with the banners to be displayed on a five-year rotation.
Hall invites more families of veterans to get involved, by calling the Yorkton branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, or visiting the city and tourism websites.
Hall says the banners are a great way to help educate the public, including students, on local veterans and the sacrifices they made for our freedom.
“Of course no one ever wants war, we don’t advocate violence, we advocate peace, and we these are the people that fought for us, that got us the rights and privileges that we have here in Canada,” she said. “In these troubling times when everybody is fearful and worried, they’re looking for strength and courage – these veterans personify that.”
A ceremony was held on Monday, in City Centre Park, to celebrate the first phase of the project.
