Charges Laid in August 2019 Homicide Case in Russell

A new development in a homicide case in Russell going back to 2019.

On August 14, 2019, RCMP responded to a report of an assault on Highway 16 near the Russell Airport, where the victim, 40-year-old Matthew Swain, was then transported to hospital, but later succumbed to his injuries.

Mounties arrested two men and a woman, all from the Gambler First Nation in connection with the incident, however released the 24-year-old woman without charge.

34-year-old Robert Fleury was charged with Manslaughter, and 29-year-old Desmond Tanner was charged with Second Degree Murder, and both were remanded into custody.
