Some Individuals Taken to Hospital Due to Smoke Inhalation Following Early Wednesday Morning Fire in Yorkton

We have new information on the early morning fire in Yorkton.

The Yorkton fire department was called out about 4:30 this morning after a blaze broke out in the kitchen of an apartment in a home on 5th avenue and Duncan street.

“When crews got on scene there was heavy smoke and there flames in the roof…so it got into the roof and attic very quickly.” said Yorkton Fire Chief Trevor Morrissey.

Morrissey says there were as many as 6 people in different apartment units, and some were sent to hospital with smoke inhalation.

“We were able to extinguish the fire, it was limited to the upper apartment attic and then there is water damage on the lower levels just because of the water runoff.” he said, adding it took them 4 hours to finally have everything out.

The next step is an investigation into the cause of the fire.

“We’re just getting to a point where we will be able to get in and have a good look and get some things figured out, but the whole origin of the fire, for all information so far seems to be the kitchen.” Morrissey said.
