Waywayseecappo Man Sent To Prison for Stabbing Police Officer

A man who admitted to the stabbing of a police officer on the Waywayseecappo First Nation, is headed to prison.

23-year-old Matthew Benn previously pled guilty to Aggravated Assault of a Peace Officer, and yesterday (Mon), he was sentenced to 9 years behind bars, but was given credit for just over three years time served.

The Manitoba First Nations Police officer was called to a business in May of 2019 on a report of a disturbance, and when he attempted to arrest a male, another male stabbed the officer multiple times.

The 29-year-old police officer was treated in hospital for serious injuries, but was released soon after.
