It’s a tragic time for the Saskatchewan RCMP after learning one of their own was killed while on-duty this morning (Sat).
In a news conference this afternoon, Commanding Officer of the Saskatchewan RCMP Rhonda Blackmore identified the Mountie as 26-year-old Constable Shelby Patton from the Indian Head RCMP Detachment.
Blackmore explained Patton died at approximately 8 a.m. while following a stolen truck from Manitoba.
He pulled the truck over in Wolseley, and while out of his cruiser, was struck by the suspect vehicle and died at the scene.
Blackmore says the stolen truck was located in a rural area northeast of Francis, Sask.
Two suspects – an adult male and female – were taken into custody at around 10 a.m. and remain in custody.
Since the RCMP is in the initial stages of the investigation, no further details can be released at this time, but Blackmore said more updates will come once additional information is available.
“Constable Patton’s family is also part of the RCMP family.”
Constable Patton has served at the Indian Head RCMP Detachment since 2015. Previously, he was on assignment at Parliament Hill in February and March of 2015.
“This morning I, along with the Indian Head Detachment Commander and Saskatchewan RCMP Chaplain, had to tell Constable Patton’s wife the difficult news that he is not coming home…. I am heartbroken for her and her family.” Blackmore said in her statement.
“They have lost a husband, son and brother. We will continue to support them during what is an extremely tragic time.”
She also thanks those who helped the RCMP during the search this morning.
“I would like to express sincere appreciation to a member of the public who provided medical assistance to Constable Patton until emergency responders could arrive. Also, to farmers in the area who provided assistance to our responding police officers who arrested the suspects.”
As a way to show respect and honour, flags at every RCMP detachment across the province will remain at half-mast until sunset on the day of the funeral.
Details on Patton’s funeral will be shared in the coming days.
