Canada Has It’s 1st Indigenous Governor General

Canada has it’s first Indigenous Governor General. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says, on his recommendation, Queen Elizabeth has appointed Mary Simon to the Vice-Regal role. Simon is an Inuit who is an officer in the Order of Canada, and is a current fellow with the Arctic Institute of North America. She is a former diplomat, and served as ambassador to Denmark.
The position became vacant in January after Julie Payette resigned after allegations of a toxic work environment in her vice-regal office.
