Peepeekisis Cree Nation And Canadian Government Reach A Settlement

Canada and the Peepeekisis Cree Nation have come to a settlement on the File Hills Colony Specific Claim.

The country will provide the Cree Nation 150-million dollars and the option to purchase up to 18,720 acres of land.

The legal battle started 35 years, in response to the transfer of industrial school graduates on Peepeekisis land in 1898, without the consent of the graduates or the Cree Nation.

The File Hills Farm Colony Scheme caused a lot of harm to the Peekeekisis Cree Nation, and in a statement, Minister of Crowns-Indigenous Relations Carolynn Bennett hopes this is a step towards reconciliation.
