NDP Request Indoor Gathering Size Limits And Guidance Heading Into Thanksgiving

With Thanksgiving Weekend coming up, the Official Opposition would like the Sask Party government to reinstate indoor gathering size limits and to provide clear public guidance for a safe weekend for people wanting to gather with friends and family.

NDP Leader Ryan Meili says COVID-19 case numbers and hospitalizations soared after the Thanksgiving weekend. Hospitalizations rose by almost five times what it was prior to the weekend and active cases almost quadrupled.

Meili pointed to Chief Medical Health Officer, Dr. Saqib Shahab’s recent comment that on our current trajectory, we are headed towards a fall and winter of misery.

He says that calls for stronger restrictions have come from across the medical community to save health care capacity and exhausted frontline health care workers.

Meili understands it’s a difficult choice because no one wants to impose further restrictions, but he suggests the system can’t sustain another spike in cases.

Saskatchewan New Democrats are calling for:

– return to indoor gathering limits for both public and private events until cases and hospitalizations stabilize.
– Provide clear public guidelines to families on how to safely enjoy Thanksgiving
