City of Melville hopeful to receive funding through PDAP to cover costs from May 21 ice storm

The City of Melville continues to work with the province on funding through the Provincial Disaster Assistance Program (PDAP), to cover cleanup costs from the May 21 ice storm.

The City successfully applied for assistance through PDAP a few days after the storm that damaged hundreds of trees and knocked out power to many residents in the City and surrounding area. Melville Regional Park was heavily affected by the storm.

Director of Finance Lynsey Swanson says they’ve provided to PDAP invoices and proof of payment for contract work, as well as time that the City spent in cleaning up from the disaster.

“We have a few details left to complete as well as the registration of claim and then we’re hoping to hear within the next month or so of what kind of funding we can receive for that event.” Swanson added.

“What we’ve been told from PDAP is our deductible is around $350-thousand, so we’re just hopeful of whatever we can receive through that program.”

She says to date, the City has spent approximately $1.24-million cleaning up from the ice storm. The costs were covered through the City’s unappropriated surplus, used for emergencies.

She also says some cleanup remains to be done, including the removal of stumps and trees that weren’t high priority at the time but are now.
