A ribbon cutting was held on Friday (Oct. 29) to mark the completion of a $12.9-million road improvement project in and around Good Spirit Lake Provincial Park.
Among the dignitaries at the event were Highways Minister Fred Bradshaw, Yorkton MLA Greg Ottenbreit, Canora-Pelly MLA Terry Dennis, Melville-Saltcoats MLA, and Environment Minister, Warren Kaeding, Last Mountain-Touchwood MLA Travis Keisig, and Reeve for the R.M. of Good Lake Dave Popowich.
Work included paving 23 kilometres of Highway 229, from the junctions of Highway 47 and Highway 9 to Good Spirit Provincial Park, as well as paving various roadways, pathways, and parking areas inside the park.
“Our parks have been incredibly busy the last couple of years,” Bradshaw said. “And this is a good sign, this is what we like to see in Saskatchewan. We like to see Saskatchewan showcase itself with our wonderful provincial parks.”
“Just about a month ago, (I) was touring up in the area (seeing) all the upgrades to the park and driving down the highway here is just unbelievable right now,” Dennis said of how impressed he was with the improvements done in the area.
The cost of upgrades inside the park is about $750-thousand.
Yorkton-based Potzus Construction was the general contractor, according to a Ministry of Highways News Release, with engineering being provided by Wood Environment and Infrastructure Solutions.
“Work inside the park is one piece of an additional $5.2 million investment into improvements inside eight provincial parks this year and include:
- Douglas Provincial Park – $650,000;
- Great Blue Heron Provincial Park – $645,000;
- Greenwater Lake Provincial Park – $750,000; Good Spirit Lake Provincial Park – $750,000;
- Katepwa Point Provincial Park – $1.1 million; and
- Rowan’s Ravine Provincial Park – $1 million.
About $85.3 million is being invested into paving and upgrading 11 highways near or leading to provincial parks.” The Ministry added.
