Fred Sasakamoose statue will be unveiled in May

Fred Sasakamoose’s statue will be unveiled on the day named in his honour. In 2021, May 18th became a day set aside to recognize one of the first treaty Indigenous men to play in the NHL.

The Dakota Dunes Community Development Corporation , Battleford Agency Tribal Chiefs and Synergy 8 Community Builders donated the statue, which when announced, was valued at around $180,000.

Troy Davies is with Synergy 8 Community Builders and says they are working with the Sasakamoose family.

“I’ve seen it and it looks unbelievable so it’s pretty exciting for us to be part of this.”

Sasakamoose passed away in November 2020 at the age of 86 due to complications from COVID-19. The statue will be placed at the main entrance of SaskTel centre opposite and facing the Gordie Howe statue.
