The Town of Kelvington continues to clean up after severe weather Saturday night, including a suspected plough wind, whipped through the community.
Kelvington Mayor Greg Standish says the local Co-Op gas bar lost its roof, along with an RTM building, and the Co-Op grocery store was flooded due to 2 inches of rain that came quickly.
“Some other businesses lost their shop doors, and there’s shingles missing, eavestroughs are damaged – one house or two had trees land right on them and put holes in them, so there’s more and more coming up everyday.” added Standish of the aftermath (pictured below).
Multiple grain bins were damaged from the plough wind. “That’s the hard part for these farmers that lost bins, they’re going to be harvesting within a couple of weeks, and now whether they can replace them in time or not is another story” the Mayor said.
The town with a population of 827 also had no power for at least 24 hours, but it has since been restored. Standish thanked SaskPower for getting service restored. He also says the community has banded together to help one another since Sunday morning.
“There’s been guys picking up elderly people that don’t have trucks, picking up their broken tree branches. Everybody’s come together very well, it’s amazing.” he said.
The town has applied to the Provincial Disaster Assistance Program (PDAP) for help to cover the costs associated with the cleanup.
