The federal and Saskatchewan governments and Prince Albert Grant Council have signed an agreement to explore new, community-oriented ways to deliver police services in 28 First Nations communities. Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino signed the letter of intent after visiting the James Smith Cree Nation where 11 people died last month in a stabbing rampage in the community and the nearby village of Weldon. He says he had a heavy and difficult visit with families of those killed and Chief Wally Burns says finding solutions to policing will help the community heal. Mendicino also says he is pushing for legislation that would declare Indigenous policing an essential service.
