The Saskatchewan RCMP is reminding everyone to be cautious about scams, especially ones over social media. On the Crime Watch Advisory Network, RCMP mentioned a scam where a friend would send a message claiming they’ve won money, but tell the potential victim in order to receive any winnings, they must pay an advance fee or buy something. The scammer might also request payment through a money service business, such as Western Union, or provide prepaid gift cards, and ask the victim to keep it secret until the victim gets their share of the winnings. RCMP say the best way to protect yourself is by calling your friend and speak with them, and as a general rule, never give out personal or banking information to a scammer.
