The harvest is all but wrapped up in Manitoba.
Manitoba Agriculture’s James Frey says the northwest region had a difficult start to the growing season – lots of snowfall, cool temperatures and wet conditions.
A warm and moderate summer followed in July, allowing crops to nearly catch up to ‘normal’ development, followed by a later start to harvest.
Spring wheat yields in the northwest region were pretty good, between 75 and 85 bushels per acre, Frey noted.
Winter wheat yielded about 70 bushels per acre on average, while fall rye only yielded 50 bushels per acre.
Frey (Fry) says canola yields varied in the northwest region, from 20-30 bushels in poorer canola fields, to 35-40 in better fields and some were in the 50 to mid-50 range.
Canola quality was said to be very good.
