Saskatchewan’s Official Opposition noted during Question Period today (Thurs) that the province is receiving high resource revenue and NDP MLA Aleana Young proposed that with that extra money in the bank, the government could cuts its gas tax, which is fifteen cents per litre.
She also noted that SaskPower announced a rate hike of eight per cent, and suggested that could be nixed to help people with affordability at a time when many are struggling with the high cost of living.
Finance Minister Donna Harpauer noted that the federal government receives more than that per litre.
She explained that at a price of $1.20 per litre, the provincial exise tax on 500 litres of fuel is $75, but the federal government also has taxes and will get $144.26 from that same 500 litres from its exise tax, the GST and the carbon tax.
